SLOT REVIEW

Last Updated: July 15, 2024

Written by Stephen Cummings

Released in May 2024 by Push Gaming, Retro Sweets is the sequel to Retro Tapes, one of the most played cluster pays slots in the past two years. Just like its predecessor, it is a highly volatile slot played on a massive 6×9 grid. It also comes loaded with features, most of them the same, but with a few new additions and reworks (covered in the next section).

Meanwhile, the top payouts remain the same (10,000x) and the RTP is almost identical (94.42%-96.49% vs 94.46%-96.47%).

Overall, Retro Sweets is definitely a worthy sequel, and if you liked the first game, we dare to say that you will like this one too. Oh yes, Retro Sweets is on our guide to the top food themed slots!

RETRO SWEETS: FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The most unique aspect of Retro Sweets is the large 6×9 grid which you cannot notice to see. The second aspect of this slot which you will quickly take notice of is that it is a cluster pays slot, so payouts are triggered when matching symbols are clustered together. When the SlotsHawk review team tested and played Retro Sweets for real money, we were amazed with how many symbols there were.

We were betting 50p per spin and although our first 10 or so spins were lacking in any wins, after around four minutes of gameplay, we triggered the bonus game which is played on the same size grid but with coin symbols and multipliers – see the video above which records our test. The aim here is to try to cluster the coin symbols together with multipliers. Respins are available here too, when we triggered our first bonus game we were awarded six free spins but we won another four during the bonus game itself. After the first free spins, we won a total of £17. Shortly later we triggered a second bonus game by matching three scatter symbols. This was even more successful and we hit a total win of £19.

We ended our Retro Spins session with a profit of £16.25.

RETRO SWEETS RTP AND FEATURES

Retro Sweets bonus game

Retro Sweets has two different RTP levels, and it is up to the online casinos themselves to decide which one they want to use. In the UK, you can get the following RTP:

RTP of Retro Sweets:

  • 96.49%
  • 94.42% (most common)

While 96.49% is pretty good, 94.42% is too low for our liking as the RTP average for online slots is around 96%. Unfortunately, most casinos will offer the 94.42% version of the game. We therefore recommend that you double check the RTP before playing Retro Sweets to make sure you are playing with the highest percentage. You can use our guide on how to check RTP if you are unsure how to do this.

You should also be aware that the Push Bet feature changes the RTP of the game. If you use the 2x bet option, you get an RTP of 96.05% (94.09%), while if you use the 4x bet option, you get an RTP of 96.31% (94.22%).

When it comes to features, they are mostly the same as in Retro Tapes, but with a few new additions. The biggest change is the addition of the instant prize multiplier symbol. The collector feature (the magnet feature in Retro Tapes) has also got a small rework, in particular the ability to collect wilds. Finally, as with almost all new Push Gaming slots, the Push Bet feature has been added. Apart from these changes, the rest of the features remain the same. We have outlined all of them below.

Features in Retro Sweets:

  • Free spins
  • Multipliers
  • Cascading reels
  • Wilds
  • Wild multiplier symbols
  • Instant prize symbols
  • Instant prize multiplier symbols
  • Collector feature
  • Cluster link
  • Push Bet

RETRO SWEETS MAXIMUM PAYOUTS

Retro Sweets free spins win

The maximum amount that you can win in Retro Sweets is 10,000x your bet. This is a solid figure, although Push Gaming are known for producing some of the highest paying online slots in the industry, some going as high as 50,000-100,000x the bet.

STRATEGIES FOR PLAYING RETRO SWEETS

Just like other slots, Retro Sweets is 100% luck based, so there are no strategies that you can use to consistently win. However, its Push Bet feature changes the gameplay slightly as it increases the likelihood of getting free spins.

So if your main goal is to reach the free spins round where the odds of big payouts are better, it could be a good idea to turn on the Push Bet feature. Just keep in mind that this strategy comes at an increased cost of 2x-4x your initial stake and with a lower RTP.

ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES

Retro Sweets has a lot going for it. The best thing about the slot is without a doubt its features. Thanks to the wilds, multipliers and instant prize symbols in combination with cascading reels, it is possible to create tons of winning clusters.

The main drawback is the adjustable RTP levels. We were also surprised to see that the Push Bet feature reduces the RTP as it usually does the opposite in other games. Here are all our findings:

Advantages:

  • Cluster Pays
  • Payouts of up to 10,000x the bet
  • Instant prize symbols up to 1,000x
  • Cascading reels feature
  • Collector feature
  • Wild and instant prize multipliers

Disadvantages:

  • Adjustable RTP
  • The Push Bet feature reduces RTP

EXTRA INFO

Retro Sweets is played on 6 reels with 9 rows and the paylines are Cluster Pays. The minimum bet level is set at 10p per spin and the maximum bet is £100 per spin. Features include repsins, scatter symbols and multipliers. it is possible to trigger wins in both the base game and the bonus game. Cascading reels are also active in the base game. The volatility of Retro Spins is high and the slot is developed by Push Gaming. Retro Sweets was released on 02/05/2024.

THE SLOTSHAWK VERDICT

SlotsHawk Verdict on Retro Sweets slot

“Very similar to its predecessor, which we think is one of the better slots with the cluster pays mechanic. Retro Sweets definitely gets the thumbs up from SlotsHawk.”
